An optic cut is a modification made to a firearm’s slide to accommodate the mounting of a red dot sight or other optical device.

Here’s a breakdown:

  • Purpose:
    • Improved Aiming: Red dot sights offer faster target acquisition compared to iron sights, enhancing accuracy and speed in shooting scenarios.
    • Versatility: Allows the use of various optical devices like magnified scopes or holographic sights, expanding the firearm’s capabilities.
  • Process:
    • The slide of the firearm is machined to create a specific recess or platform where the optic can be securely mounted.
    • This often involves removing material from the slide and creating precise mounting points for the optic’s screws.
  • Types of Optic Cuts:
    • Manufacturer-Specific: Some manufacturers offer slides with pre-cut recesses designed for specific optics (e.g., Glock MOS).
    • Custom Cuts: Gunsmiths can create custom optic cuts to fit various optics and accommodate individual preferences.
  • Considerations:
    • Co-witnessing: Some optic cuts allow for co-witnessing, meaning the iron sights remain visible through the optic’s window, providing a backup aiming system.
    • Strength and Durability: The optic cut must be properly executed to maintain the structural integrity of the slide and ensure reliable function.
